Backwardation

When futures prices fall below spot — an unusual state in crypto that often signals fear or short-term supply stress.

Backwardation is the inverse of contango: futures trade below the spot price. In crypto it appears as negative funding rates, meaning shorts are paying longs — a sign that traders are aggressively positioned bearish or hedging.

Because crypto’s structural bias is long, deep backwardation is relatively rare and often marks capitulation or acute fear, which contrarians watch as a potential local-bottom signal. It also flips the basis trade: instead of shorting the future, the profitable structure reverses. Like all positioning extremes, it’s context rather than a standalone trigger.
