What is the Bitcoin halving?
Roughly every four years (every 210,000 blocks), the reward miners receive for adding a new block is cut in half. This is written into Bitcoin’s code and is how its supply schedule stays fixed at 21 million coins. The April 2024 halving cut the reward from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC; the next halving, at block 1,050,000, will cut it to 1.5625 BTC.
Why it matters
Each halving halves the rate of new Bitcoin entering circulation. Past halvings (2012, 2016, 2020, 2024) have been followed by significant bull markets, though past performance never guarantees future results — and each cycle’s dynamics differ as the market matures.
