Open Interest

The total value of outstanding derivatives contracts — a gauge of how much leverage is riding on the market.

Open interest is the total number (or dollar value) of futures and perpetual contracts currently open and unsettled. Rising open interest means new leveraged money is entering; falling open interest means positions are closing or being liquidated.

Read alongside price, it tells a story: price up with rising open interest signals conviction-backed buying; price up with falling open interest suggests a short squeeze covering rather than fresh demand. Extreme open interest is a fragility gauge — a market stacked with leverage is primed for cascading liquidations, the violent wicks crypto is known for. It’s one of the most-watched derivatives metrics for exactly that reason.
