Multisig (Multi-Signature)

A wallet requiring multiple keys to sign — eliminating single points of failure for treasuries and serious holdings.

A multisig wallet needs M-of-N keys to authorize a transaction — 2-of-3, 3-of-5 — so no single lost, stolen or coerced key moves funds. It’s the standard for DAO treasuries, exchange cold storage and increasingly for families and businesses securing meaningful holdings.

Multisig converts catastrophic single failures into recoverable events: lose one of three keys, funds remain safe and recoverable. Costs are complexity and coordination — more setup, more careful backup management (keys stored in separate locations), and on some chains higher fees. Institutional variants (and MPC, its cryptographic cousin) now secure a large share of all custodied crypto.
