Play-to-Earn (P2E)
A gaming model where players earn crypto or NFTs with real value — briefly explosive, then largely unsustainable.
Play-to-earn games reward players with crypto tokens or NFTs that have real-world value, letting people earn by playing. Axie Infinity’s 2021 boom made it a phenomenon, with players in some regions earning meaningful income — a genuinely novel intersection of gaming and finance.
Most P2E economies proved unsustainable: they depended on new players buying in to fund earlier players’ earnings — a structure resembling a Ponzi once growth stalled — and prioritized earning over fun, so engagement collapsed when token prices fell. The lesson reshaped the sector toward “GameFi” and games that are fun first with lighter, more sustainable economies. P2E is a case study in how token incentives can bootstrap explosive growth and then implode without genuine underlying demand.
