GameFi

The blend of blockchain gaming and DeFi — aiming for player-owned assets and economies that outlast the play-to-earn bust.

GameFi (game + finance) is the broad category of blockchain-based gaming, encompassing player ownership of in-game assets as NFTs, token economies, and DeFi-like mechanics. It emerged partly as a rebrand and evolution after the play-to-earn model’s excesses, emphasizing sustainable design and actual gameplay.

The compelling idea is genuine player ownership — items you truly own and can trade or carry across games, versus traditional games where you rent everything from the publisher. The persistent challenge is making games that are fun first and financialized second; many GameFi projects still struggle to attract players who aren’t primarily there to earn. It’s an active frontier where the honest question for any project is whether people would play it if the token went to zero.
